Lily Caulfield recorded her first career hat trick to lead Yarmouth-Freeport to a 6-1 victory over Biddeford/Wells/TA on Thursday January 10th.
Yarmouth-Freeport came our hungry to score and dominated the first half of the period creating several scoring opportunities. Caulfield put Yarmouth-Freeport on the board first by lifting a rebound from a shot from Guay over Biddeford goalie’s leg pad at 8:09. Biddeford generated some offense in the last four minutes when sophomore Weinrich was sent to the box for hooking but Yarmouth-Freeport goalie Allie Perrotta stopped every shot. Defense moved the puck quickly out of the zone and Yarmouth-Freeport took the 1-0 lead into the second period.
Yarmouth-Freeport continued to create scoring opportunities in the first few minutes of the second, but Biddeford goalie was solid and quick to cover her rebounds. Perrotta was faced with a breakaway half way through the period, making a great diving save with her stick on a deek to the right side, denying Biddeford the change to tie the game up. Weinrich gave Yarmouth-Freeport a 2-0 lead with good puck control behind the net before banking it off the back of the goalies pads. Caulfield scores her second goal with 2:36 left in the period picking up a rebound right in the crease from Bradford’s shot giving Yarmouth-Freeport a three goal lead. Biddeford finds the back of the net with a minute left in the game getting them on the board and bringing the score to 3-1 to start the third.
Just fourteen seconds in the final period freshman Olivia Bradford drives deep into the offensive zone, but loses possession of the puck on a cut-back move around a Biddeford defender. Caulfield picks it up and buries it with a low shot for her third goal of night, Bradford picking up the assist. At 10:55 Guay is sent to the box for tripping and Biddeford goes on the power play for the second time. Yarmouth-Freeport’s Guertler chips the puck off the boards high in the defensive zone sending sophomore Emma Moll on a breakaway during the penalty kill who scores to make it 5-1. With just eight seconds left in the game defender Swift takes a high shot from the point witch is batted down by Biddeford goalie but cannot be controlled and slips past the goal line for Yarmouth-Freeport’s sixth goal of the night.
