The Yarmouth-Freeport varsity girls team won their fifth straight tonight with a 7-1 win over Mt. Ararat/Morse. Sophomore goal tender Allie Perrotta had another great game between the pipes, sophomore Lilly Weinrich scored three goals for her first hat trick and the Yarmouth-Freeport girls took advantage of several Mt. Ararat/Morse penalties and scored four power play goals.
Mt. Ararat found the net first just a minute and a half into the game with a back door goal but that would be the only shot Perrotta would allow in for the night. Yarmouth-Freeport had their first power play opportunity five minutes into the game when Mt. Ararat/Morse was sent to the box for a trip. Swift scored her first high school goal with a shot from the point, assisted by Guertler. Yarmouth-Freeport went on penalty kill with 5:25 left when Guay was called for a hook but Mt. Ararat was sent to the box a minute later with an interference call. Yarmouth-Freeport did not capitalize on the power play but Guay made the score 2-1 with a minute to go in the period.
The second period started with a goalie change by Mt. Ararat/Morse and then taking a body checking penalty at 14:11. Yarmouth-Freeport made it 3-1 a few seconds after the power play expired with a drive from the defensive zone and shot by Newberg, buried by Weinrich for her second goal of the night. Newberg was then sent to the box two minutes later for a cross check at 9:59, but Mt. Ararat/Morse was unable to score or get the puck out of their zone for a majority of their power play thanks to a great forechecking effort and offensive drive by sophomore Emma Moll.
Yarmouth-Freeport opened up the scoring in the third period three minutes in with an unassisted wrap around goal by Weinrich. Mt. Ararat/Morse was called for a body checking penalty at 7:41, senior Kyaira Grondin hustled coast to coast and put the puck over the goal tenders shoulder for the girls second power play goal of the game, taking the lead to 5-1. Yarmouth-Freeport would go onto draw two more penalties with less than six minutes in the game, Weinrich earned her third goal on a 5 v 3, scoring the third power play goal of the night. Mt. Ararat headed back to the box with a body checking penalty with three minutes left in the game and Moll capitalized on the power play making it 7-1 with 1:43 left in the game. Guay was sent to the box with 23 seconds left in the game for cross checking.
The Yarmouth-Freeport varsity girls play next at Winslow this Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. at the Ice Vault in Augusta.
