Clippers Fall to Greely

Unforced turnovers, special teams play and a four-minute stretch in the first period all combined into a 4-1 loss to first-place Greely. Yarmouth’s performance against Cape and Greely has shown that the key to the Clippers’ success in the post-season will be more consistent, physical play and simple, blue-collar hockey.

In the opening minutes, Yarmouth came out flying and played well. However, Greely is a skilled squad and back-to-back Yarmouth penalties resulted in two power play goals in just over a minute. Greely then tacked on another goal a little over 2 minutes later when Yarmouth’s defense failed to take the body and Greely’s Jake McDonald walked in untouched for the tally. In a span of four minutes, the Clippers suddenly found themselves facing a three-goal deficit.

In the second period, play became a bit chippy and the Clippers showed some life. However, the Yarmouth power play unit was unable to convert any of its four man-advantage chances.  Late in the second period, Cooper May gave the Clippers a boost with an unassisted goal and Greely took a 3-1 lead into the locker room.

In the final period, the Clippers seemed to fade and an unforced turnover on a breakout allowed Greely to keep the puck in the Yarmouth zone, which led to Greely’s final goal.
