The game had all of the trappings of a classic Cape v. Yarmouth tilt. The rink was packed with fans and both teams needed the win to move up in playoff seedings.

From the opening face-off, Cape finished their checks and showed a willingness to play physical hockey. Unfortunately, the Clippers did not respond and never established a physical game or effective forecheck in the 4-1 loss.

The game started well as Cooper May ’18 buried a wrist shot to give Yarmouth a 1-0 lead at 10:15 of the first period. Matt Sanborn ’19 and Sam Marjerison ’19 picked up the assists. However, Cape evened the score when an uncovered Alec Riggle blasted a slap shot from the point with traffic screening Latham.

A succession of Yarmouth penalties gave Cape the man advantage and they took a 2-1 lead on a power play goal with 8 seconds remaining in the first period.

Back-to-back Cape penalties gave Yarmouth an opening in the second period. However, the Clippers’ power play struggled to move the puck effectively to develop quality scoring opportunities and was content with angle shots from the perimeter. At the end of two periods, Cape retained its 2-1 lead.
