Yarmouth Beats Edward Little

The Clippers pulled out a 2-1 win over Edward Little High School, which keeps the Clippers neck-and-neck with York for the third seed in Class B South. Throughout the game, Yarmouth appeared confused by Edward Little’s trap forecheck and they struggled with unforced turnovers and an inability to effectively move the puck, but two hard-nosed plays were the difference in the game.

Yarmouth took the lead in the first period when Justin Veilleux ’20 went hard on the forecheck, separated the E.L. defenseman from the puck,  and fed the puck to the high slot where Matt Sanborn’s off-speed shot eluded the E.L. goaltender. However, the lead was short-lived as Edward Little scored two minutes later to tie the game.

The Clippers were outplayed physically in the first period, but gradually began to engage in the second period. The result was a chippy game with matching penalties and special teams opportunities.

The Yarmouth power play struggled with offensive zone entry and puck movement, but Kurt Heywood ’19 still picked up the game winner on the power play. A broken play led to a bouncing puck in the E.L. crease and Heywood simply out-battled the E.L. defensemen for the winning goal. Cooper May ’18 and Spencer King ’20 were credited with the assists.

The third period was a bit of a nail-biter as turnovers gave Edward Little a number of scoring opportunities, but as usual, Dan Latham ’20 was up to the task as he turned away 27 shots on 28 attempts. Latham’s statistics this season have been remarkable as he has posted a 2.11 Goals Against Average and a .911 Save Percentage.
