Chris Romano scored the opening and game-winning goals to give Yarmouth a 3-2 win over Class A Portland/Deering. The win puts the Clippers in first-place in Class B South with two games to play.
At 3:20 into the game, Romano scored off a breakaway to give the Clippers a 1-0 lead. Goaltender Dan Latham picked up his first point of the year as he and Patrick Grant were credited with assists.
Yarmouth looked to be in the driver’s seat, but Portland battled back and tied the game when a defensive breakdown led to a goal by Mason Martell.
In the second period, the Clippers had a four-minute power play, but struggled to get shots through to the net. At the end of two periods, the score remain tied despite the Clippers outplaying Portland in the middle stanza.
Thirty seconds into the third period, Cooper May (Grant, Conrad) fired home a rebound on a carry-over power play to give Yarmouth the lead. Later in the period, a cheap hit from behind on Joe Truesdale led to a five-minute major penalty. Truesdale was shaken up, but returned to action.
On the ensuing power play, Romano made Portland/Deering pay as he beat Sam Segal with a low shot to give the Clippers a 3-1 lead. Cooper May and Walter Conrad were credited with the assists.
Late in the third period, Portland’s Camren King scored on a shot through traffic that Dan Latham could not see, but it was too late as the Clippers held on for the 3-2 victory.
